Hickory Bridge Farm

We have been trying to celebrate birthdays for Lexa and Jack since we got back to the cabin.  With all the travels, work and other things going on we finally got a chance to celebrate today.

One of our favorite places to eat in the area is the Hickory Bridge Farm restaurant in Ortanna, PA.  It is about 30 minutes from the cabin and we usually make it there a couple times a year, but this was our first visit this summer.  Cassie, Jack & Lexa came up to the cabin and we gave them their gifts and had a little celebration then.

When we got ready to leave for the restaurant it was pouring rain and foggy.  Our reservation was for 7:30pm and it was getting dark enough that making the right turns was getting a little hairy up here on the mountain.  We did make it fine, but we were a little late arriving and then had to make a mad dash into the restaurant.

The restaurant is in an old barn that has been converted into a cozy place.  The old beams and floors and still in place and they have decorated the place very nicely.  They serve three entrees, dessert, drinks and all the side fixings family style.  It is an all you can eat place and the food is very tasty.  We managed to eat more than we should have and wound up bringing our dessert home with us for eating on Sunday.  Carrot cake and bread pudding and I can't wait to get started on finishing them off.

We managed to get some dinner pictures of us that show the restaurant fairly well.

My favorite redhead and me.

We came back to the cabin and visited some more until 12:30am and finally decided to call it a night.  At least the heavy rain has stopped and they should have a nice drive home.

We upgraded the phone service at the cabin and if you want to talk to us on the phone, it is just two longs and a short.  Just ask for me.

Hey, I am so old that I remember making phone calls on a phone just like this one.  Not as nice, but the same never the less.  It was back in the days when an American operator would place your long distance call for you.  Yes, a live person and you didn't have to press 1 for English, 2 if you knew your parties number, etc.  If you wanted to know what was going on in the area, the local operators could fill you in on the business of just about anybody.  You learned to talk in code and not say anything you didn't want the town to know.  The good old days.

  1. For sure the goood ole days. I remember those phones well. My Dad had a store an the phone from the house and the store phone were hooked into the other so if I was on the phone he could listen into the conservation, no privacy there for sure.
Have a great Labor Day week-end. Soon you will be leaving the East coast. Linda

  2. At my house it was a long, two shorts and a long. If anyone on your line got a call everyone else picked up and listened.
When my grandfather died at the house someone had to drive into town and bang on the telephone office wall to wake up the operator so she could call the undertaker.
BUT it was a simpler life with HST and DDE...Naps in the summertime so we wouldn't catch polio. Home made ice cream in the park and free outdoor movies.
