Soccer & Mint Julips anyone?

We watched the U.S play Antigua Barbuda last night.  It was the first game in qualifying matches for the 2014 World Cup and turned out to be a sloppy 3-1 victory for the U.S.  It wasn't one of the better games played by the U.S. squad, but they got the win and that is what matters the most.

They played the game in Tampa during a driving rainstorm all night and that affected play somewhat.  The Antigua Barbuda team played their hearts out and got the score to 2-1 in the second half and were giving the U.S. team all they could handle.  A goal at the 71st minute mark pushed the score back to 3-1 and the U.S. played it safe after that.

Today we watched the Denmark-Netherlands game in the Euro Cup tournament and Denmark pulled off the upset.  It was the first time Denmark has beaten the Netherlands since 1967.  Denmark was out shot by a 26-8 margin, but made the most of their opportunity.  Go Denmark!

Later Germany won a hard fought game against Portugal by the same score of 1-0.  It was a good game to watch with a lot of shots on goal and some great defensive plays.

The Belmont Stakes horse race is coming up in about 45 minutes so I will cut this short so we can watch it.  The favorite horse, I'll Have Another,  was withdrawn due to a leg injury and will be retired to stud service.  Gerry is making some of her Mint Julips since Larry Jr & Jane live in Mint Hill and they missed watching the Kentucky Derby with us.  Any excuse to have Mint Julips is welcome with us.  :::-)

Grant picked Union Rag to win the Belmont Stakes and he was right.  Jockey John Velazquez rode Union Rag to the victory and also rode Rags To Riches to victory in the 2007 Belmont Stakes.   It was a good race and I think my horse came in 5th or 6th.  That is why I don't bet on horse races.

World Cup

It has been so hot here in the northeast that we have been hunkering down with the a/c running full blast day and night. It keeps the temps at a comfortable level, but not cold. Whew, we may have to go to Tucson early this year to escape the heat.

Since it was so hot we decided to go out for dinner. After much thought we decided on the Ott House for dinner since it is one of our favorite places in the area. Imagine the dismay on my face when we drove there and found out they were closed for vacation. WOW! Now what?

We decided to try The Palms across the street from the Ott House. It was different and they served a reasonable meal for the price, but it wasn't some place we would go to again.

Yesterday we drove down to a local bar to watch the Spain-Germany soccer game in the World Cup. The bar was almost empty and we got to run the "clicker" to control the volume. It was an exceptionally well played game and Spain controlled the game throughout and won 1-0 on a header off of a corner kick. I am waiting for the day when the US can play at a level like this game. Someday!
