We had originally planned on driving the motor home to Barb & Henry's 30th wedding anniversary celebration, but the little vacation in the hospital put these plans on the back burner. Concord is about 440 miles from the cabin and I don't like to drive that far in one day, especially driving on the East coast highways. The traffic is so heavy and backups occur frequently, while out in the Southwest you are the only vehicle on the road at times.
We modified our plans and made hotel reservations for three days and then we will stay with either Barb & Henry or Larry Jr. and Jane for another 3-4 days. They both have large homes and room for us.
The drive down was uneventful except for 3-4 times where it rained so hard that I could barely see the road. I-81 tends to be a heavily traveled road at high speeds with a lot of truck traffic. Nothing like running 75mph and having a tractor trailer truck on your tail about 5 feet behind you. If you pull over into the slow lane, then the long lines of cars in the fast last are so close it is difficult to get back in that lane. Of course, there is always a driver from Florida that will cut you out at 75 mph to gain a car length. Never fails!
We stopped a number of times to exercise, eat lunch, and just take it easy. The gas stop at the FlyingJ in southern Virginia was a zoo. There were lines three deep and cars trying to get into the pump areas from both sides. It was the worst I have ever seen there and to think we have stopped there in the previous motorhomes for gas and fought those cars for position. Never again will I try that in the new motorhome since it is diesel and I will head for the truck lanes.
We checked into the hotel and then went over to Larry Jr and Jane's home to visit with the family. Cassie & family were staying there, along with Gerry's niece Erin. We were listening to an audio book on the way down and when we pulled into the driveway nobody was home. They had called and said they were at Costco and would be back soon. No problem. We sat in the driveway and listened to the audio book until they showed up. We are at the end of the book and curious to see how it turns out.
We had a nice visit with everyone and managed to get into some spirited conversation on a number of subjects. It seems that we don't agree on everything and it sounds like the beginning of WWIII when we discuss it. Of course, we all express our opinions and remain friends afterward, but it sure does get hot and heavy at times. Never a dull moment. I sometime wonder what Jack & Jane ( who married into the family ) think about these discussions. Sometimes they just sit there and look back and forth like they are afraid of getting caught in the crossfire. I do love a spirited conversation and hearing other peoples opinions, even if I don't always agree with them. It makes life interesting.
We stayed until midnight and then drove back to the hotel. Barb, Henry, Jared and Hannah had gone to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert and when we drove by that area the cars were streaming out of the side road onto US 29 and that slowed us down a little. No problem since we were listening to the audio book. Henry sent me some photos from the concert, but I didn't see them until this morning. I could see from the looks on their faces that they were having a great time. Also, the 16oz cans of Michelob Ultra contributed to the look, also.
The concert was outside and about 10:15 pm the skies opened up and they were caught in downpour. Skynyrd was the main reason they went to the concert and their portion of the evening was finished and the Allman Brothers were almost finished with the portion, so they decided to go home and dry off. Sounds like a smart move to me.
Yes, I do know who Lynyrd Skynyrd is since the girls had all his music when they were younger. Also, the Allman Brothers band was there as well and I remember them also. They all must be eligible for SS benefits by now and possibly Medicare, but they can still pound out the music.
